Brief summary

Nerve sheath tumors recur in 3 to 11 per cent of cases. There are not methods and criteria for determining the risk of relapse now. Ki-67 is a useful predictive marker used in oncopathology. However, its counting is variable from researcher to researcher and requires validation. The purpose of the study: to compare the Ki-67/MIB1 values estimated in different ways in schwannomas and to choose the most optimal and reproducible method; to investigate the possibility of using Ki-67 as a predictive marker for relapses. Materials and Methods. The study included patients over 18 years of age with a diagnosis of «schwannoma», who were treated in two specialized medical institutions in the period from January 2005 to December 2023. All patients underwent surgical treatment in the scope of total surgical resection of the tumor. We investigated 61 morphologically verified cases of schwannomas with Ki-67/MIB1. Statistical tests included Mann-Whitney U-criterion, Wilcolson criterion, Spirman correlation analysis. Results. In our study, Ki-67 values, calculated on area 1 mm2, are most reproducible, including an arithmetic mean of 4 values: Ki-67 values in the «hot spot», 2 mean Ki-67 values and the minimum value of Ki-67. In relapse tumors, the value of Ki-67 is statistically higher than in tumors without relapse. Conclusion. Based on the results of our research, Ki-67 may be used as a prognostic surrogate marker for schwannomas relapses.
