Influence of the relative insufficiency of the testosterone on the basic androgen-independent systems of the organism of the military service servicing on the objects of destruction of chemical weapons

Brief summary

Implementation of works related to the destruction of chemical weapons has a negative impact on the state of male reproductive system in the form of a decrease in total testosterone and an increase in prolactin levels, which are reflected in the main androgen-dependent systems of the male body (spermatogenesis, energy metabolism, bone metabolism). Goals and objectives. To assess the influence of subclinical androgen deficiency detected in servicemen taking direct part in the work on the destruction of chemical weapons on the functional state of the major androgen dependent systems (spermatogenesis, ability to withstand physical activity, bone metabolism). Materials and methods. A total of 55 male servicemen were divided into 2 groups: the first one was military servicemen engaged in their work at chemical weapons destruction facilities; the second was from servicemen of various units and formations of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation that were not related to chemical weapons destruction facilities (group " Control"). Servicemen of both groups evaluated the content of total testosterone, gonadotropins (luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, prolactin), ejaculate analysis, physical exercise (treadmill test), and bone mineral density by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Results. Based on the results of the survey, the military personnel of the chemical weapons destruction facilities are determined the development of relative androgen deficiency combined with hyperprolactinemia. The presence of a relation between relative androgen deficiency and changes in the spermogram, the state of bone metabolism, the ability to withstand physical exertion is shown. Conclusions. Relative androgen deficiency, mediated by the influence of a complex of negative factors of the working environment, leads to the development of testicular insufficiency, a decrease in tolerance to physical activity, a decrease in the bone mineral density in the military personnel of chemical weapons destruction facilities.
