Variant anatomy of portal vein and its practical implication
Saint-Petersburg I.I. Dzhanelidze research institute of emergency medicine

S.M. Kirov Military-Medical Academy, Saint Petersburg

Saint-Petersburg University

Brief summary

Data on the morphometric characteristics of the portal vein and its tributaries and variants of its formation differ significantly in the literature. Classically, the portal vein is formed by the fusion of the superior mesenteric and splenic veins behind the isthmus of the pancreas at the level of the L2 vertebra. Deviations from the classical version of portal vein formation are more than in 35% of observations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the morphometric characteristics of the portal vein and its tributaries, the prevalence of its typical and atypical variants of formation, and the clinical significance of the variant anatomy of the portal vein according to the literature. Knowledge of the pattern of the formation of the portal vein, the entry of tributaries of the portal vein, is necessary both for surgeons performing operations on the organs of the upper floor of the peritoneal cavity, and for radiologists interpreting the results of diagnostic studies.

Key words

inferior mesenteric vein, variant anatomy, portal vein, atypical patterns, portal hypertension syndrome, superior mesenteric vein, gastrectomy, splenic vein.
