Characteristic of diarrhea syndrome in rats during sulfur mustard poisoning

Brief summary

Diarrhea syndrome in clinical practice, including with various poisoning, is quite common. Analysis of the literature data allows us to consider diarrhea syndrome as one of the leading clinical manifestations in the structure of sulfur mustard poisoning. Despite this, the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of sulfur mustard diarrhea have not been practically studied, moreover, there is no detailed information in the scientific literature about the features of the dynamics and severity of the syndrome under consideration with sulfur mustard poisoning in the experiment. The aim of the work is to evaluate the dynamics and severity of diarrhea in case of sulfur mustard poisoning in rats, as well as to study the possibility of using indicators of this syndrome as a criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of the developed means of prevention and treatment of sulfur mustard poisoning. Materials and methods. The experiments were performed on 300 white male rats. In the study of acute toxicity of sulfur mustard in the dose range from minimally lethal to absolutely lethal, the severity of diarrhea and mortality were evaluated. When investigating the possibility of using indicators of diarrhea syndrome as a criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of the developed means of prevention and treatment of sulfur mustard poisoning, a ROC analysis was performed, sensitivity and specificity parameters, the area under the ROC curves (AUC) were calculated. Results. The results obtained demonstrate that indicators of the severity of diarrhea reflect the dynamics and severity of sulfur mustard poisoning in rats. The greatest severity of diarrhea was observed at the peak of sulfur mustard poisoning (3 days) in the entire range of doses of the toxicant. In the studied sample, AUC of the criterion for the severity of diarrhea on the 3rd day in relation to the lethal outcome corresponds to its good prognostic ability. The sensitivity and specificity parameters for the estimated criterion were 0.92 and 0.55, respectively. Conclusion. Thus, the criterion of the severity of diarrhea can be reasonably included in the program for evaluating the effectiveness of the developed means of prevention and treatment of sulfur mustard poisoning.
