Role of cytokines in multiple myeloma pathogenesis
Pavlova A.A., Pavlova I.E., Bessmeltsev S.S.

Russian Institute of Hematology and Transfusion

Brief summary

The review shows structure, classification and cytokine biological activities. We describe that cytokines act as mediators forming complex interactions between the immune system and growing tumor. We summarize high polymorphism of cytokines and their receptors as well as characteristics of their gene expression. In this article we examine the role of major cytokines (e.g. IL-1β, IL-3, IL-6, IL-10, IL-11 and TNF-α) in the development of multiple myeloma – type of cancer formed by malignant blood cells - and observe cytokines involved in processes of bone destruction which are common for patients with this type of cancer.

Key words

cytokines, genetic polymorphism, multiple myeloma, single nucleotide polymorphisms
