Brief summary

Hallux rigidus affects approximately 20-35% of the adult population. The variety of clinical and radiological manifestations of the disease explains the complexity of creating a universal classification and selecting the surgical approach. Choosing a specific surgical intervention from the wide range of options is a challenging task that requires consideration of various clinical manifestations of the disease and a number of other individual factors. The purpose of this study was to conducting a review of Scientific Literature and Contemporary Articles Addressing the Issue of Dysfunction of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint and the Application of Surgical and Conservative Treatments for this Pathology. Materials and Methods. This literature review analyzes foreign and domestic scientific publications dedicated to the treatment of Hallux rigidus. In some cases, personal comments on the choice of a particular method are provided. A search for scientific articles over the past ten years was performed in the electronic databases GoogleScholar, PubMed, eLIBRARY, PubMedCentral by using keywords below. Conclusions: The choice of a specific surgical treatment method for hallux rigidus can be a complex task for surgeons due to the variety of clinical and radiological manifestations of the disease. It is important to remember that, in addition to clinical and radiological manifestations of first metatarsophalangeal joint arthritis, a number of factors need to be considered, which can only be determined through communication with the patient. Conservative treatment may alleviate pain in Hallux Rigidus grades 0-1. However, further research is needed to determine the optimal treatment methods and their effectiveness. Additionally, existing surgical treatment methods for Hallux Rigidus have their own characteristics and significant drawbacks. Further research, including comparisons of the results of various techniques, is necessary for a more objective analysis of the data and conclusions presented in this study.

Key words

Hallux rigidus, first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis, first metatarsophalangeal joint endoprosthesis, osteoarthritis, osteotomy, arthroplasty.
