Brief summary

Silver compounds are used for medical purposes from Ancient times. There are significant amount of its forms such as nanoparticles and salts today and it is not completely clear which of them is more effective and safe at the same time. Thus, in the present work a comparative research on neurotoxicity of silver nanoparticles coated with polyvinilpyrrolidone with the size 8.7?0.4 nm and silver citrate was conducted. Silver preparations were administrated into the organisms of C57Bl/6 laboratory mice daily orally in the amount of 50 ?g per day per animal during 60 days and their behavioral and cognitive functions were assessed after that. Silver nanoparticle exposure to mice ended up in the anxiety increase while there was no deviations in behavior in mice exposed to silver citrate. No changes of long-term contextual memory were detected at the exposure both to silver nanoparticles and silver citrate. Thus, silver citrate did not demonstrate any neurotoxicity unlike silver nanoparticles and therefore presumably this salt is more preferable form for oral therapeutic treatment than nanoform of silver. An absence of toxic effects at silver citrate exposure is due likely to different mechanisms of silver ion?s interaction with a biological cell in comparison to the nanoparticles and the biocompatibility of its anion.
