Possibilities of circular scleral buckling in surgical treatment of recurrent retinal detachments.

National Medical and Surgical Center named after N.I. Pirogov

Brief summary

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of circular scleral buckling in treatment of recurrent rhegmatogenous retinal detachments complicated by proliferative vitreoretinopathy C type 4 after a primary vitrectomy. Material and methods: Results of surgical treatment of 40 patients (40 eyes) with a recurrent retinal detachment after a primary vitrectomy were analyzed. All patients were divided into two groups according to the technique of surgery: In the Group I patients were reoperated through 25 G vitreoretinal surgery in combination with retinotomy, a silicone oil exchange or endotamponade of silicone oil; in the Group II circular scleral buckling was performed, in some cases with a combination with a repeated vitreoretinal surgery. Results: Preliminary results of the study indicate a high efficiency of circular scleral buckling in treatment of arecurrent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment after a primary vitreoretinal surgery. Conclusions: The use of circular scleral buckling in treatment of arecurrent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment after a primary vitrectomy demonstrates a safer and more sparing attitude to aretina, and also allows to achieve favorable functional and anatomical results.
