Prophylactic efficacy of edaravone in acute radiation injury
State research and testing Institute of military medicine of the Ministry of defense of the Russian Federation



Brief summary

The effect of prophylactic administration of edaravone on survival rates of white outbred male mice exposed to sublethal doses of gamma radiation was studied. It was established that the anti-radiation activity of edaravone is most effective when prophylactically administered 30 minutes before irradiation. A single intraperitoneal injection of the drug at a dose of 450 mg/kg increases the survival rate of mice irradiated at a dose of 7 Gy (LD90-100/30) by 80 % (p ≤ 0.05). The leading role in the radioprotective effect of the drug is played by the protection of hematopoietic stem cells. The number of endogenous colony forming units of the spleen with the introduction of edaravone is four times higher than the studied parameter in the control group (19.3 ? 5.5 and 2.7 ? 0.9 respectively). The results confirm the prospect of further research, aimed at developing means of chemical protection against radiation damage based on the specified drug.
