Brief summary

The actual direction of development of modern toxicology is the introduction of cellular technologies in the practice of experimental research. In this regard, the analysis of current data has been carried out and the history of the development of the cell culture method of tissues and organs of animals and humans as universal models for studying various types of cell effects has been considered. This article describes the main advantages and disadvantages of primary and continuous cell cultures, the achievements in creating three-dimensional tissue models, including organ-on-a-chip (organ-on-chip), as well as mathematical models for studying the reaction at the tissue level. The main directions of validation of toxicological studies using cell cultures are described, the limitations of their use due to the special requirements for the tested substances are emphasized.

Key words

toxicology in vitro, cell cultures, organ-on-a-chip, biological model, cytotoxicity.
