Brief summary

Background and methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study of all cases adult (aged 16 and older) acute poisonings in Yekaterinburg. The main goal was to evaluate the safety of the main pre-hospital treatment procedures of poisoned patients. Results: Among the patients with reduced consciousness, 27.5% were lavaged without securing of airways, of whom 3% developed pneumonia. Further, 85.3% of the patients were lavaged after more than one hour after intake of the toxic agent. One third of the patients were given IV fluids without indications, whereas 1% did not get IV infusion in spite of hypotension; among the patients with a respiratory depression, 2% of patients were brought to hospital without treatment. This study revealed the necessity of precise guidelines for pre-hospital treatment of poisoned patients.
