Coexistence of two types of nonconvulsive epilepsy in patients and genetic animal model (wag/rij rats)

Brief summary

Simultaneous appearance in EEG of two types of nonconvulsive epileptic discharges was investigated in patients and in a genetic animal model (WAG/Rij rats). It was shown using a modified wavelet transform that the time-frequency structures of generalized (1st type) and occipital (2nd type) of discharges in patients and in rats are similar. Patients and the model showed besides separate occipital discharges also coupling of these two types of discharges. This combined paroxysm always began with the occipital discharge and it’s time-frequency structure was also similar in patients and WAG/Rij rats. In experiments with animals opposite effect of pharmacological substances on the nonconvulsive discharges of the 1st and 2nd types were shown. This data suggest the possibility to consider the WAG/Rij rat population as a good model for the investigation of the specifics of pharmacotherapy of this complex brain pathology.
